Implant Dentistry: Staying Ahead of the Curve

While dental implants are a popular option for restoring missing teeth, they require precise placement that should be left to the experts. Dr. Kemp has completed more than 235 continuing education hours in implant dentistry and provides this service to patients across the Triad several times each month.

In Dr. Kemps 10-month course on implant dentistry, he developed the knowledge and skill to place dental implants with precision. He also completed an all-day course on imaging for implant dentistry, offered in collaboration with UNC Dental School’s Department of Radiology. During this hands-on workshop, he learned how to better interpret cone beam CT scans. These advanced 3D images, which are offered in our office, ensure every patient’s implant is placed with optimal care. As a result of Dr. Kemp’s continuing education initiatives (typically taken only by periodontists and oral surgeons), our patients with missing or broken teeth can experience the restored function and appearance of their natural tooth.

When patients come into our office for an implant, Dr. Kemp will first assess the treatment needed for preparation. Sometimes a tooth has been missing for years, but often, a broken tooth must first be extracted. If an extraction occurs, the site must heal completely before the implant can be placed. The implant is made of small metal posts that are designed to mimic natural tooth roots. They are surgically placed beneath the patients gums, and over the course of a few weeks, fuse permanently with the jawbone. Once this process is complete, Dr. Kemp can apply a crown that integrates perfectly with the adjacent teeth. After the crown is applied, the patient goes on as if they have their natural tooth. Other than regular brushing and flossing, no additional care is needed!

As stated by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, “There’s a difference between “dentists who do implants” and “dental implant experts.” While there are numerous dentists that place dental implants, patients should trust their care to someone who has invested the time and energy into mastering this innovative treatment option.
